I’ve always enjoyed the discussions around our flag.

A symbol of pride. A symbol of nationalism. Of racism. It’s history. It’s depictions in the media. The drives to change it. the resistance to change it. It’s meaning is liquid depending on the story you are trying to tell.

I don’t necessarily have a solid view on our flag but I wanted to make a picture that changed the flag for the sake of changing it.

I made my flag out of 100’s and 1000’s because I thought back to a time when navigating the shape shifting symbolism behind the flag was simple. As a kid. It was just the flag. Something you coloured in with texta upon a photocopied piece of paper

It took me a while to develop the technique of getting the 100s & 1000s to stick evenly and without the colours running as well as finding. 100s and 1000s between the floorboards forever.

The piece appeared in a telecast on the ABC News about buying and selling art on the blockchain.
