We did it. Alex Wadelton and I saw our passion project that we started 2 and half years ago, to get a statue of Nicky Winmar made, was unveiled in Perth on Saturday.
It was moving to see Nicky shed a tear upon seeing his spur of the moment stance against racism immortalized in bronze forever.
We worked with some really amazing people along the way who got involved to see this thing done. The AFL backed this idea in from the start and it is really a credit to them and our game.
It’s NAIDOC week and this iconic image means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. We hope that this statue can play a role in increasing understanding and shifting the goal posts for Australia’s race relations and respect for our first peoples a little bit further in the right direction.
